Success or Significance?

Just about every worldly measure of success is based on what one can accomplish, on how much money one can earn, the kind of house one live in, the car one drive, how quickly one can climb the corporate ladder…and the list goes on.

No question about it. We are an accomplishment-oriented society. Doing great things wins the prizes; being a person of significance often takes a back seat. Don’t we have this all backward? God certainly thinks so. He never measures us by what we do for Him but by what we are for Him…the character of our inner being.

Is it important what we do? Yes, it is. But it is far more important who we are…and far more difficult to measure. Success lies in what we do. Significance lies in who we are. This critical difference challenges those of us who have grown up in a culture that rewards individuals more for what they do than for what they are.

The most basic question everyone faces in life is “Why am I here?” “What is my purpose?” Real meaning and significance comes from understanding and fulfilling God’s purposes for putting us on earth. Ask yourself why God has placed you where you are and blessed you like He has. Ask Him if He would have you get involved in effectively reach out to your peers and associates and multiply what He has entrusted to you.

As you start your journey from success to significance, begin living passionately for today and purposefully for tomorrow. God bless you on your journey.
